Take a daily multivitamin

Take a daily multivitamin

Robins tends to recommend that men take a daily multivitamin. "There is little likelihood of harm, and some potential benefits," he said.

Many multivitamin formulations for men might include antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, and the minerals selenium and zinc. Some research has found that antioxidants may cause a slight increase in sperm count and movement, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

It makes sense that antioxidants may improve sperm quality because they can protect against free radicals, which can cause damage to DNA within sperm cells, Robins said.

Get regular physical activity

Get regular physical activity

Robins said he encourages men to get regular exercise because it helps reduce stress, makes men feel better about themselves and benefits their long-term health.

While being physically active is beneficial, some studies have suggested that overly intense exercising and strenuous training schedules in men, such as triathletes and marathon runners, may be detrimental to their fertility.

Researchers have also looked at whether bike riding can affect sperm, because the sport involves long periods of sitting in a position that increases scrotal temperatures as well as bouncing and vibrations that could cause trauma to the testicles. (A few studies have suggested that long-distance truck drivers may also have more fertility problems for similar reasons as avid male cyclists.)

One study found that men who attended fertility clinics and reported they rode bicycles for at least five hours a week were more likely to have low sperm counts and poor sperm motility compared to men who did other forms of exercise and those who did not exercise.

Other research has suggested that bike riding in men is linked with a higher risk for erectile dysfunction. But there's little data on whether or not cycling actually impacts sperm function, Robins said.

Eat healthy foods

Eat healthy foods

"The role of diet in male fertility is unclear," Robins told Live Science.

Even though the science may be inconclusive, it still makes sense for men to eat a variety of healthy foods, including plenty of fruits and vegetables, which are rich sources of antioxidants that may help to produce healthy sperm. Men should also consume fiber-rich foods, healthy monounsaturated fats and moderate amounts of lean protein.

Robins said men frequently ask him whether drinking soda can decrease their sperm counts. He said he tells them there's no good evidence to support that caffeine has any effect on men's fertility.

How to get pregnant fast: 9 tips for quick conception

woman snapping cigarette

1 / 9

Step one: quit smoking

Smoking is known to reduce fertility in men and women. It's also dangerous for your baby if you're still smoking when you conceive.

If you haven't kicked the habit yet, why not help each other to give up using our quitting hints and tips?

Couple cycling

2 / 9

Step two: exercise together

Getting fit is a great way to boost your fertility. If you're not used to exercising, start by building more movement into your day. For example, you could try getting off the bus a stop earlier, or taking the stairs instead of the lift. You may also enjoy going to a dance class together, or taking up jogging.

healthy food

3 / 9

Step three: eat healthily

Food and fertility are linked. If you both stick to a healthy, balanced diet, you may be able to boost your chances of conceiving. Find out the best foods to eat for men and women who are trying for a baby.

couple relaxing on a swing

4 / 9

Step four: relax!

Trying to conceive can be stressful. Unfortunately, too much stress may make it more difficult to conceive for both men and women, so try to take it easy when you can. Give each other a soothing massage, try some deep breathing exercises, or just enjoy a fun meal out. Whatever helps you feel calm and relaxed!

woman with drink

5 / 9

Step five: cut down on booze

Alcohol can harm your baby if you drink too much after you conceive, especially in the early weeks before you realise that you're pregnant. Heavy drinking can also reduce fertility in men. So it's best if both you and your partner avoid alcohol, or at least cut down, as soon as you start planning to have a baby.

man using laptop

6 / 9

Step six: keep 'em cool!

When testicles get too hot, the sperm they produce suffers. Sitting for long periods, using laptops on laps, and working in hot environments can all affect sperm production. It has even been suggested that tight underwear contributes to fertility issues, though there isn't much evidence for this. If you're hoping to be a dad, putting your laptop on a table and wearing loose-fitting boxers could make a difference.

conceptionmoon

7 / 9

Step seven: take a break together

A holiday or even a long-weekend getaway can be just what you need to relieve stress, and enjoy some relaxing time together. In fact, some parents swear that their "conceptionmoon" was the key to getting pregnant. Some travel companies even specialise in creating the perfect baby-making breaks!

couple cuddling

8 / 9

Step eight: revive the romance

If you can't afford a holiday, or can't take time off, try other ways to revive the romance. Some couples start to feel that they're only having to try to conceive. If this sounds familiar, forget fertile windows, and try to rekindle a date atmosphere with your partner.

couple cuddling

9 / 9

Step nine: have regular, but not regimented,

As we all know, having is the most important thing! Although it helps to know when you're ovulating, just having every two days to three days will give you the best chance of conceiving.

10 GREAT WAYS TO USE COACHING TOOLS AND EXERCISES IN YOUR PRACTICE

There are many reasons for using coaching tools and exercises, including helping our clients grow, build confidence and save much needed time. Below are 10 specific ways to use coaching tools and exercises in your practice.

1. GIVE A COACHING EXERCISE AS HOMEWORK AND KEEP YOUR CLIENTS IN A COACHING FRAME OF MIND BETWEEN SESSIONS

Giving clients the option of a homework coaching exercise keeps clients in the coaching zone between sessions. Delve deeper into a topic you covered in session, or use it for a larger self-discovery agenda like identifying their values or completing a personal SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) exercise.

2. A COACHING EXERCISE MAKES A GREAT NEWSLETTER SIGN-UP GIFT

What better way to encourage people to sign up for your newsletter list than to offer them a fun coaching exercise? Give it a jazzy title, and make sure it solves a problem or helps your target market achieve a goal. Choose a favorite tool—an exercise that highlights your expertise and offers your clients a taste of coaching with you. Who knows? They might get hooked!

3. SAVE YOURSELF TIME AND EFFORT. BE SURE YOU DON’T FORGET ANYTHING IMPORTANT!

Create yourself forms and tools to save you time and ensure you remember the important things. What are your repeatable tasks? It could be a new client checklist that reminds you to “take payment” or a welcome letter template for new clients. Other great examples include a spreadsheet to record client hours, a client contact details form and your intake and wrap-up processes.

Set aside 30 minutes and create forms to reuse. List the important steps/items, give it a meaningful name and save it to a helpfully named folder so you can find it again. Tip: It doesn’t have to be perfect the first time; simply add/improve things as you think of them.

4. USE A COACHING TOOL OR EXERCISE TO LIGHTEN UP A CHALLENGING TOPIC

Coaching unearths challenging topics for our clients, and sometimes this depth can be intimidating. A coaching exercise is a great way to lighten up heavy topics. Giving your client a worksheet lets them know others have the same issues and reassures them that there’s a process to be supported through.

For example, the Urgent Important Matrix can help a client see why they’re always stressed and in crisis mode. Other examples could include a handout of the grief process, drawing their inner critic and making a list of their deepest fears or relationship needs.

5. INCLUDE A COACHING EXERCISE IN YOUR WELCOME PACK AND MAKE COACHING TANGIBLE!

Coaching is often packaged so that clients pay hundreds of dollars up front for something they don’t fully understand and haven’t received yet. Including a coaching exercise in a Welcome Packet helps concretize the coaching, provides value right away and helps justify a client’s financial investment.

6. INCREASE LEARNING RETENTION WITH COACHING EXERCISES IN YOUR WORKSHOPS

Worksheets and exercises are a fabulous way for clients to personalize workshop learnings—taking the information you share and applying it to themselves. In addition, coaching worksheets make a great takeaway from your workshop, hopefully containing your contact details so an attendee can follow up with you.

7. USE A COACHING TOOL TO HELP A CLIENT WITH A SPECIFIC TOPIC

Over time you’ll notice recurring coaching topics with your coachees. These are great areas to create a specific coaching exercise around. Create an informative handout or help them solve a specific problem with a coaching exercise. Some great examples of areas to create a specific tool around include time management, prioritizing, identifying stress triggers, goal setting and limiting beliefs.

8. MAKE A “BACK OF ROOM” GIVEAWAY FOR YOUR NETWORKING EVENTS, CONFERENCES, ETC.

At networking events, conferences and workshops, there is usually a table at the back of the room where people put brochures and business cards. This is a great place to put a coaching tool or exercise. Choose an exercise that is simple and visually appealing, and watch as people take them home, with your branding and contact details as well! Tip: The Wheel of Life is a pretty universal and appealing tool.

9. CREATE A COACHING TOOL TO SELL ON YOUR WEBSITE

As your experience grows, you’ll become clear on the common issues your clients face. This is when you create a meatier product to help your clients deal with that issue. Not only is there the potential for additional income, but selling a specific coaching tool also positions you as an expert in your field.

10. FINALLY, I RECOMMEND YOU USE COACHING FORMS AND EXERCISES TO GROW YOURSELF!

Anything you create for others can be trialed first by you. It’s a great way to check quality—and you’ll learn about yourself along the way too.

So, there you have 10 great ways to use coaching exercises and worksheets in your practice. I hope you feel inspired to get out there and start using or creating your own coaching worksheets and exercises!

IN HINDSIGHT

It is hard to believe that the year is gone, and soon we are going to start a new year with a renewed board and with a combination of old and new projects. But before we do that, I would like to stop the unstoppable time because there is much wisdom in the saying that life has to be lived forward, but it can only be understood and appreciated looking backward. My purpose here is twofold: I would like to appreciate what we have achieved together within this year and give you a glance into how we did it.

In our organization, the chair of the global board has the opportunity and responsibility to propose a direction for the work of the global team, building on the legacy of the previous chairs and adding new focal points for further improvements.

Thanks to the great leadership of Damian Goldvarg (2013-2014), Dave Wondra (2015), and those before them, a year ago I was entrusted to take over the lead of a well-formed, competent team with a mature strategic and collaborative culture based on the ICF values and Board Promises. In addition to my predecessors’ focus points and the usual strategic work, I decided to invest more energy into strengthening the communication throughout the whole organization and into advocating shared leadership, encouraging the global directors to lead from every chair. I believe that great results can be achieved through effective collaboration not only within the board, but also with the staff and all the chapters and members. The secret of great collaboration is extraordinary communication, which is never easy, because in this global organization, we represent many different cultures and perceptions. Therefore, we are continuously striving to create a shared organizational culture, where we can all listen, ask, answer and deal well with temporary uncertainties until we find the most suitable solutions.

Looking back at the year, what stands out to me is the abundance of the projects we have brought forward and accomplished. It has been a very busy year with a fast pulse, and now it feels good to take a big breath and enjoy a few snapshots of what we have initiated and achieved this year:

Within the board

In January, we onboarded two new board members and participated together in a board training, where we not only had the chance to improve our knowledge and skills, but also to share our admired best practices with hundreds of other board members. Our missing ingredient towards excellence was the lack of a board assessment tool, which would monitor the performance and development of every board member. By now we created and successfully completed the first two rounds of thorough assessment during the summer.
We, the board and our senior management team, worked with a board coach to further develop the quality of our conversations, invoking and sustaining constructive thought-provoking discussions.
For our members, we

Experimented with new ways of communicating with the membership by facilitating board videos, Basecamp groups and open calls with the global board. We also shared key documents such as meeting minutes and progress reports on the ICF website.
Partnered with a professional consultant company and started the preparations for a revitalized and very unique annual global conference, which is going to take place in Washington, August 24-26, 2017, with new features and format.
Held another successful Business Development Series to support the entrepreneurial spirit and competence of our members.
Organized the fourth ICF Advance, based on what we learned from your previous feedback, and it turned into a very well-received and well-evaluated conference.
Released our third—and so far the biggest—Global Coaching Study and presented key findings to coaches and coaching clients in several countries.
Completed and released our third piece of industry research on building a coaching culture with the Human Capital Institute.
Approved the creation of a Thought Leadership Institute to fulfill our strategic goal and become the most relevant professional coaching association.
Represented ICF and promoted coaching at important corporate conferences globally.
Held the second Global Leadership Forum, bringing together chapter leaders from all over the world to support their leadership and to capitalize on their collective intelligence.
Had the pleasure of visiting many chapters and connecting with members.
Expanded the regional structure and have hired additional staff for the regions
Trained a few groups of assessors.
Created a new member onboarding program.
Approved the launch of our new Learning Management System and improvements for the website.
Started to review and improve the current structure of the organization in order to better support our strategic goals
Moved into the final process of revising the MCC credentialing process
Joined the ICF Foundation in its efforts to ignite social progress globally and provided financial resources to help it do so.
All together, we

Grew into a global community with almost 30,000 members.
Achieved a credentialing milestone, with more than 20,000 credential-holders globally.
Said goodbye to four outgoing board members and welcomed four new colleagues.
I am wholeheartedly grateful for all of your diverse contributions to our growth and success. It is time to celebrate what have we done and who have we become and look forward into the future with curiosity, passion and commitment. I wish you all a rewarding completion of the year and a successful transition into the opportunities and life adventures of the next year.

HOW TO USE YOUR LIFE STORY TO SELL YOUR COACHING SERVICES

I came across a coach’s bio the other day and as amazing as her accomplishments were, she came across as arrogant and over-confident. Let’s call her Maria.* She had the perfect rags-to-riches story of being an orphaned, teen-aged, run-away mother who started and sold a seven-figure business due to her own personal awesomeness. Now she generously bestows her greatness upon those willing to hire her at a bajillion dollars per hour.

So how do you demonstrate your track record of success to potential clients without coming across as my grandpa would say, “holier than thou”?

“You have to be careful,” explains business coach Iman Aghay, “that when you share your rags-to-riches story, you put the insights, system, process, or program that you developed on the pedestal. When you put yourself on the pedestal, people lose confidence that they can replicate your success.”

Maria clearly has an immense amount of internal drive and determination despite the obstacles that life throws at her. But prospective clients don’t blindly believe that her drive and determination will ooze into them when they hire her. Rather than touting her own greatness, it would be more powerful for her to have a system for overcoming adversity and staying positive against all odds. Then her success story would support the service she sells and clients would be more convinced to hire her.

So here are my top five tips for writing a coaching bio that sells.

1. PUT YOUR SYSTEM ON THE PEDESTAL
As I’ve discussed above, when you share your story, emphasize what you’ve learned along your life’s journey and how you’ve created a system that can be replicated by others.

2. IDENTIFY YOUR CRUCIBLE MOMENT
By investigating a wide range of young and old leaders, the authors of the book Geeks and Geezers, leadership pioneers Warren Bennis and Robert Thomas, concluded that many leaders have experienced crucible moments: turning points that “force us to decide who we are and what we are capable of.” Share the turning point in your life and how it impacted you. Your readers will be moved by it. Moved, that is, to take action and call you.

3. SHARE YOUR REASON FOR COACHING
What’s your purpose for coaching? Who are you impassioned to serve? State it clearly so your readers know whether or not you are the right coach for them. By the time your readers get to the end of your bio, they should be either hitting the back button because you’re the wrong coach for them, or hitting the “contact me” button.

4. IDENTIFY AN ENEMY
Every good story has a hero and an enemy. Yours should too. When you describe the enemy of your life journey, try to identify an enemy that everyone can relate to. Maybe it’s oppressive parents, your own internal doubt, or procrastination. Whatever it is, your ideal clients will know exactly what you’re talking about and want to know more about how you conquered the enemy (i.e. pick up the phone and have a conversation with you).

5. CONCLUDE YOUR BIO WITH A CALL TO ACTION
Too many coaches miss a huge opportunity. They write an amazing bio, get readers feeling warm and fuzzy inside, and just leave them hanging. There’s no next step.

If someone gets to the end of your bio, there’s a good chance they want more. Make it easy for them to keep engaging with you. Maybe you have an online calendar system, an intake form, an assessment they should take, a book you want them to buy, but regardless of what it is, state what it is you want them to do next. If nothing else, you should invite them to call you for a free consultation.

FROM THE TOOLBOX: DO YOU GIVE ADVICE TO YOUR CLIENTS?

Your coaching client is exploring options regarding a dilemma. She asks point blank, “So, what do you think I should do?” This column examines possible replies from different perspectives: neuroscience, coaching ethics, dual roles and liability.

ENGAGING THE WHOLE BRAIN
As coaches, we believe that clients have their own answers and the role of the coach is to create a space for the client’s wisdom to emerge. Giving advice detracts from the client’s autonomy. When a coach gives advice, the client owns less of the solution. Without this ownership there is less accountability. As 2009 research on the relationship between financial advice and decision-making by Jan B. Engelmann, C. Monica Capra, Charles Noussair and Gregory S. Berns illustrates, the brain ”offloads” while it is taking in advice. The brain goes into neutral and the actual advice does not embed in the neocortex while the advice is being given. As a consequence, ownership might happen later or not happen at all. As coaches, we want our clients’ brains to be fully engaged! By giving advice, we appeal mostly to the rational parts of the brain. However, to fully engage the client, the emotive and sensory parts of the brain should also be involved in the decision-making process. Without a fully engaged brain, the likelihood that the client will make an unethical decision increases dramatically.

As a professional you might function as a coach, an individual person or an expert. When you have expertise in a particular area, and are asked for your opinion, you can make general comments without giving specific advice to the client. For example, Dalia Nakar, PCC, a Retirement Coach, tells her clients, “This is how I have seen this done before,” “I have heard it happen that people can … and the result was positive,” or, “I am aware that sometimes people do it (this way) and others (that way).” Continue to make it a learning experience in which the client can gain awareness and take ownership. For example, you might ask, “What does this reveal to you that you were not aware of before?” or, “How is this information (or perspective) useful to you?”

NAVIGATING DUAL ROLES
As professional coaches, we should ask ourselves whether giving a client advice comes from a motivation to serve the best interests of the client or to satisfy our own ego. Everyone likes to feel respected for having given a worthwhile opinion, and nothing in the ICF Code of Ethics specifically says you may not give advice to clients. However, the ICF Code of Ethics does ask you to check for relationship conflicts that result from dual roles. It is inappropriate, confusing and may even be unethical to switch roles during a coaching conversation. People in dual roles need to pay more attention to the partnership to ensure clear boundaries.

Dilemma: Frank
Frank works as an internal coach practitioner and human resources manager. He has just been informed that his company is planning to lay off some people in a few months and some of the layoffs include his clients. Does Frank wear his coach’s hat or his HR hat? Does he have to withdraw as the coach? What is his company’s protocol for this conflict? Even though you, as the coach, are clear about your two roles, it may be confusing to the client. The role you are playing should always be clear to the client.

If your client asks for your recommendations, remember to thank him or her for being interested in your opinion. Explain that as a coach you do not give advice. Help the client explore resources by partnering in a brainstorming conversation to generate a list of possible ways to proceed and kinds of people who can offer what is needed. This list might also include you, either as a layperson or as an expert. If you agree to give your opinion as a layperson or expert, have this conversation in a different location and at a different time from that of the coaching meeting. Be very clear that you are responding as an individual person, not in your role as a professional coach.

Example: Sophia
Sophia, a public administrator, told her coach that she had a very important meeting that would decide the fate of her program. She knew her coach had been a manager and taught a course in strategic meeting management, so she asked for a few strategic tips. Sophia’s coach proposed these three steps:

1) First, she would coach her regarding this situation.

2) A week later, in a separate meeting, she would serve
as a consultant and provide tips. This consulting meeting would be governed by a new contract, separate from the coaching agreement.

3) She would ask Sophia to evaluate the difference between the two meetings in terms of value and effectiveness in the short and long term.

Sophia agreed to take these steps, and she reported that the most useful time was when she was coached. She said, “I learned how to think for myself about issues that were important to me. I learned the importance of including others in my dilemmas. In the long term, coaching was definitely more helpful than consulting.”

Dilemma: Marcella
Marcella, a financial planner and credentialed coach, was coaching Anne, who had been focusing on assuming responsibility for her financial management. The conversation turned to the feasibility of socially responsible investing. Anne asked Marcella which company was a solid one for socially responsible investments. A few weeks later, Marcella and Anne met with the purpose of exchanging financial investment information. After Marcella shared her suggestions, Anne followed her investment advice and lost money. Will Anne remember that Marcella, the coach, gave her the information, or Marcella, the financial planner?

It may not be part of our job to give advice, yet it is part of the misconception and the myth that a coach is also a consultant. If you give advice or your opinion, be sure to explore how it fits with your client’s values, assumptions and perspectives. Don’t just state your advice. Reflect on whether your motive for giving advice is your need to give it or the client’s need to hear it. Ensure that if the client chooses to act, the gut and heart have been included in the considerations, not just the head.

A NOTE ON LIABILITY
Even though you might do your best to be clear when you are not responding as a coach, the client’s memories and perceptions can still become distorted. Be aware that when you respond as a professional, you assume liability. Even if a client perceives that you gave advice—regardless of whether you did or not—he might hold you liable for any action he takes. Your job is to help the client increase awareness and responsibility.

HOW TO SELL A GROUP PROGRAM

HOW TO SELL A GROUP PROGRAM

When you want to increase your income as a coach, but you don’t have room in your schedule to take on more clients, you have two options: (1) raise your prices, or (2) offer a group program where you can work with a lot of clients all at once.

Let’s talk about the latter. Group programs are a great way to help more people, make more impact, and make more money without maxing out the limited number of hours you have in the day. But filling up your group program is a little trickier than selling your one-on-one services mainly because you have to enroll a lot of clients all at the same time.

In this video, you’ll learn:

3 tips for effectively selling your group programs and getting prospects eager to enroll

How to communicate the value of your program to your audience

The #1 thing you need to do before you launch your group program
