IN HINDSIGHT

It is hard to believe that the year is gone, and soon we are going to start a new year with a renewed board and with a combination of old and new projects. But before we do that, I would like to stop the unstoppable time because there is much wisdom in the saying that life has to be lived forward, but it can only be understood and appreciated looking backward. My purpose here is twofold: I would like to appreciate what we have achieved together within this year and give you a glance into how we did it.

In our organization, the chair of the global board has the opportunity and responsibility to propose a direction for the work of the global team, building on the legacy of the previous chairs and adding new focal points for further improvements.

Thanks to the great leadership of Damian Goldvarg (2013-2014), Dave Wondra (2015), and those before them, a year ago I was entrusted to take over the lead of a well-formed, competent team with a mature strategic and collaborative culture based on the ICF values and Board Promises. In addition to my predecessors’ focus points and the usual strategic work, I decided to invest more energy into strengthening the communication throughout the whole organization and into advocating shared leadership, encouraging the global directors to lead from every chair. I believe that great results can be achieved through effective collaboration not only within the board, but also with the staff and all the chapters and members. The secret of great collaboration is extraordinary communication, which is never easy, because in this global organization, we represent many different cultures and perceptions. Therefore, we are continuously striving to create a shared organizational culture, where we can all listen, ask, answer and deal well with temporary uncertainties until we find the most suitable solutions.

Looking back at the year, what stands out to me is the abundance of the projects we have brought forward and accomplished. It has been a very busy year with a fast pulse, and now it feels good to take a big breath and enjoy a few snapshots of what we have initiated and achieved this year:

Within the board

In January, we onboarded two new board members and participated together in a board training, where we not only had the chance to improve our knowledge and skills, but also to share our admired best practices with hundreds of other board members. Our missing ingredient towards excellence was the lack of a board assessment tool, which would monitor the performance and development of every board member. By now we created and successfully completed the first two rounds of thorough assessment during the summer.
We, the board and our senior management team, worked with a board coach to further develop the quality of our conversations, invoking and sustaining constructive thought-provoking discussions.
For our members, we

Experimented with new ways of communicating with the membership by facilitating board videos, Basecamp groups and open calls with the global board. We also shared key documents such as meeting minutes and progress reports on the ICF website.
Partnered with a professional consultant company and started the preparations for a revitalized and very unique annual global conference, which is going to take place in Washington, August 24-26, 2017, with new features and format.
Held another successful Business Development Series to support the entrepreneurial spirit and competence of our members.
Organized the fourth ICF Advance, based on what we learned from your previous feedback, and it turned into a very well-received and well-evaluated conference.
Released our third—and so far the biggest—Global Coaching Study and presented key findings to coaches and coaching clients in several countries.
Completed and released our third piece of industry research on building a coaching culture with the Human Capital Institute.
Approved the creation of a Thought Leadership Institute to fulfill our strategic goal and become the most relevant professional coaching association.
Represented ICF and promoted coaching at important corporate conferences globally.
Held the second Global Leadership Forum, bringing together chapter leaders from all over the world to support their leadership and to capitalize on their collective intelligence.
Had the pleasure of visiting many chapters and connecting with members.
Expanded the regional structure and have hired additional staff for the regions
Trained a few groups of assessors.
Created a new member onboarding program.
Approved the launch of our new Learning Management System and improvements for the website.
Started to review and improve the current structure of the organization in order to better support our strategic goals
Moved into the final process of revising the MCC credentialing process
Joined the ICF Foundation in its efforts to ignite social progress globally and provided financial resources to help it do so.
All together, we

Grew into a global community with almost 30,000 members.
Achieved a credentialing milestone, with more than 20,000 credential-holders globally.
Said goodbye to four outgoing board members and welcomed four new colleagues.
I am wholeheartedly grateful for all of your diverse contributions to our growth and success. It is time to celebrate what have we done and who have we become and look forward into the future with curiosity, passion and commitment. I wish you all a rewarding completion of the year and a successful transition into the opportunities and life adventures of the next year.
